Menifee Students Participate In Cabbage Program
Submitted by Lori Franklin
Bonnie Plants distributes free cabbage plants to third graders across the country to foster an interest in gardening and the environment. Cabbages are delivered to students whose teachers have signed up to participate. Students in these third grade classrooms each get their very own cabbage to plant, take care of and harvest. The cabbages produce oversized heads, making the process even more exciting for kids. As part of the program, Bonnie gives a $1,000 award to one student in each state. Through the annual Cabbage Program, Bonnie hopes to share their love of gardening, as well as inspire kids to develop an interest in nature and the outdoors.
MenifeeCountyElementary School has participated in the Bonnie Plant Cabbage program for the past 9 years. Mr. Little, Guidance Counselor, states that "each year it begins with about 40 students, but only a couple usually see the project completely through. It is a great family project for the summer. Students usually complete the project with grandparents, so it is a great way for generations to work together."
This year Joel Joseph and Ben Rose were the only students to complete the project. Both students worked with their grandfathers Bill Stiltner (Joel's grandfather) and Donald Gunnell (Ben's grandfather). Ben's mom, Melissa Rose, canned sauerkraut. Ben reported, "The good part was cutting it. I had fun with papaw". Joel reported,"It was fun. We didn't use Miracle Gro, but we mixed bug spray and water. It got sunburnt, my mom said, so we didn't get to eat it. You know I guess it is kinda like science."
